The swine flu infection spreads mostly through airborne virus. The second most common way the infection spreads is through direct contact. Airborne viruses spread through sneezing and coughing. They can enter nasal and oral passage and infect people.
Sometimes, healthcare workers, doctors and nurses who treat patients get infected through physical contact. Therefore if the patient is showing symptoms like coughing and sneezing, then proper protective gear should be worn. Especial care should be taken to avoid contact with the sputum.
If these symptoms appear in workers at pig farms then they should seek treatment immediately. Additionally if such symptoms appear in people who live with or come into contact with these workers, then they should also see a doctor.
People who suffer from weakened immune system as a result of an existing disease or drugs or cancer should see a doctor if they show these symptoms. If these persist for more than 5 days in children or for more than a week in adults, then they must get themselves examined by a doctor immediately. Pregnant women who have such symptoms too should get themselves tested for swine flu.
