How To Prevent Acne

Preventing acne is a lot easier and less troublesome than treating them. Hence knowing and practicing what can be used against acne is a lot beneficial. Here are some points to show you how to prevent acne.

I Practice hygiene

1. Wash your face regularly

Your skin secretes oil (sebum) daily. If this oil gets trapped in the skin, then it will cause acne. Hence practice good facial hygiene. Washing your face at regular intervals during the day will help you remove excess oil and dirt. These are the two things that allow bacteria to proliferate on your skin. Use a soft scrubber or use your hands with a mild force. Use mild soap and cleanser. Using stronger soaps and cleansers will make your skin dry and be counterproductive. It’s always better to use warm water to wash your face. Hot water can not only burn your skin, it can also cause dehydration.

Do not scratch your face or pimples regularly. Otherwise infection will spread from one part of your face to the other through dirty infected fingers. Keep disposable tissue papers handy for scratching and wiping your face. Wash your hands well along with your face as either can pass germs on to the other.

2. Keep your hair clean

You also have to wash your hair daily. The oily secretion on your scalp, along with the dirt that gets trapped on the hair, gets coated on your face either when the hair brushes against your face or when they get washed down with sweat onto your face. Hence it’s necessary to wash your hair daily. Though hair enhances your look, it acts as a natural trap for dirt and microorganisms. Hence it must be cleaned daily.

3. Wash your towels and pillow covers regularly

Keep a separate towel for your own use and do not share it with others. Similarly you should not use towels used by other members who are infected. Used towels can transfer the infection to you. Wash your towel, the pillow covers you use as well as your bed-sheet and napkin regularly. Even if you clean your body thoroughly, an infected sheet or towel can re-infect your skin.

II Follow a healthy diet

1. Food

A healthy food is one without much oil and fat. A mix of vegetables, whole grains, fish and fruits is considered a healthy food. Heavy consumption of meat and meat products can increase the level of fat in the body which is not healthy. Junk food containing lot of chemicals and preservatives is not good for the body either. Food items rich in Vitamin A and Beta- carotene are always good for skin. Some foods items that are rich in these two are – spinach, carrots, apricots, sweet potatoes, kale and cantaloupes. Various seeds and nuts provide essential fatty acids that can help keep the body healthy. The good health gets reflected in a healthy glowing skin.

2. Water

Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins. Some of the toxins may be secreted through the skin. Drinking plenty of water can flush out these toxins quickly from the body leaving little toxins to be flushed out through the skin. The lesser the toxins secreted through the skin, the better the chances of preventing acne. Water is also a good natural moisturizer for the skin. It helps in keeping the skin supple allowing the accumulated dirt, oil and microorganisms to be washed smoothly.

3. Drinks

Find out which kind of drink suits your body. Fruit juices will benefit all. Some people prefer coffee or tea instead. Coffee can be good and bad for the skin. The anti-oxidants in it are beneficial to the skin, but the caffeine can start a spate of acne. Tea is a much better drink compared to coffee as it also contains a lot of anti-oxidants but little caffeine. Drinks like alcohol and soda are not good for skin.

III Use cosmetics wisely

1. Wash makeup thoroughly after use

Makeup tends to block the pores in the skin trapping excess oil produced in the skin. Moreover oil based makeup and creams add to the oil content of the skin leading to acne. Makeup creams are made of chemicals that can lead to acne and skin damage over long use. Do not wear makeup for more than a few hours and make sure that you remove all makeup thoroughly before you sleep. Use proper toner and soap to get rid of residual makeup that may be difficult to wash. Use water based cosmetics for a healthy acne free skin.

2. Use a good moisturizer

Moisturizers are essential during summer as it provides necessary moisture. A simple moisturizer is effective most of the time and you need not necessarily buy costly moisturizers always. During hot dry days, it is a good idea to apply a moisturizer cream on the face and other exposed skin before going to bed. It will keep the skin supple and free of cracks. A healthy moist skin is a good defense against acne.

3. Use a skin friendly anti-bacterial

If you have an oily skin, then using a bactericide is a good idea. Benzoyl Peroxide is a good anti-bacterial solution that you can use on your skin. It can destroy the acne causing Propionibacterium Acnes bacterium. Another anti-bacterial solution is Clindamycin Phosphate. Use these two chemicals properly else you will bleach your skin and cause acne. Try applying these a little at first to see what reaction takes place on your skin. A little reddening and inflammation is common along with dryness. The bacterial count on your skin will come down along with the oil on your skin. Overuse of these chemicals tends to dehydrate the skin. Take care to keep these chemicals out of the eyes, mouth and any cracks in the skin. Also keep them away from hair and clothes as they will quickly lose color when these chemicals come into contact with them.

IV Other safety factors

1. Protect your skin from too much sunlight

Sunlight is good for your skin, but at moderate levels. If you are going out into the sunlight to sunbathe then wear a thin layer of sunscreen. A little of sunlight is good for your skin and body as Vitamin D is produced. The ultraviolet rays in the sunlight will destroy bacteria and other microorganisms. But limit your exposure to sunlight. During hot summers, a dark tan can appear on the skin and it can become dry through dehydration. Hence drink plenty of water when in the sun. When you are back in the comfort of your home then wash off the sunscreen immediately. Leaving it on will only block the pores in the skin; promoting acne.

2. Exercise regularly

As you sweat during exercise, your body excretes toxins, oil and dead skin cells. The flow of sweat also washes the pores draining the trapped sebum. Moreover regular exercise brings the body’s hormone production levels under control. When it is under control it reduces the amount of sebum secreted by the skin. These are the two benefits of exercising. However the sweat, sebum, dirt, salt and bacteria that accumulates on the skin must be washed off. Hence you must bathe properly after exercising to remove these substances from your skin. Special care must be taken of the face and the folds of the skin. This will prevent acne.

3. Learn to relax

Staying relaxed helps the body fight infection easily. Stress weakens the body’s defense mechanism providing an easy route for the bacteria in the body and on the skin to cause infections. Hence learn to relax and prevent acne.

These tips show you how to prevent acne. But learning them is just the first half; you have to act according to them. Practicing them will help you keep acne at bay.
